The 79 Mile Challenge will have one aid station, will go through the city of Lonsdale passing a Casey’s, a grocery store, and a Subway, and will go near a bar in the city of Veseli.

The aid station will be located around mile 18.5 near the Garden of Eagan Farm. At this aid station there will be water and a snack.

After the aid station at mile 18.5, your next stop will be in the city of Lonsdale at mile 40. The route through Lonsdale should take you on the town’s bike paths, and will bring you by a Casey’s, Mackenthun’s grocery, and Subway. Right by Subway you’ll jump back on a bike path that winds around and ultimately takes you out of town and back to gravel.

After your stop(s) in Lonsdale at mile 40, should you need it, there is a bar in Veseli around mile 53. The bar, Brewsters, is a couple blocks east of Jackson Ave., where you are otherwise supposed to turn left and go north on.

After that, there are no more until you finish at mile 79.13. Plan and pack accordingly.

There is a support vehicle should you have any mechanical or other issues. To be sure, there is only one support vehicle, which will prioritize requests for assistance from the 17.9 Mile Stroll and Half 79er over requests from the 79 Mile Challenge. This is because we assume those who undergo a 79 mile ride are capable of and familiar with unsupported rides. Nonetheless, last resort type thing, we will assist you but you may have to wait awhile.

Start time for this route is 9:00am. Please arrive one-half hour early to get your registration packet.

    Enjoy your ride!

For the Ultra there are a number of potential re-fueling stops along the way.

At mile 18.8, when you turn left and head south on Eveleth Avenue, there is an aid station right there near Garden of Eagan Farm. There will be a white tent with a table. This aid station is for all routes except the 17.9 Mile Stroll. There will be water and a snack here.

At mile 39.2, coming into the city of Faribault, you will get onto Mills Towns State Trail. Take this trail through Faribault and onto Sakatah Singing Hills Trail. Note how Mills Towns trail will take you under Interstate 35.

At mile 41.5, Mills Towns trail turns into Sakatah Singing Hills Trail. The best place to stop is shortly after you get on Sakatah trail, just prior to crossing 7th St NW, at around mile 42. Here, to your left and prior to crossing 7th St NW, is a Caribou, Hy-Vee Gas, Subway, and Hy-Vee. And if none of those hit the spot, then Dairy Queen can be found just a few blocks further down, on your right, around mile 42.5.

From there, you’ll be on Sakatah trail for a bit. Take it in and let your arse enjoy the asphalt. Your next potential stopping point is in the city of Waterville, around mile 56.8 , where your path/route goes left, but Casey’s convenience store is to the right. There should be a sign directing the same.

After Casey’s, continue through the city of Waterville, getting back onto Sakatah trail, which you will then take to the eastern outskirts of the city of Elysian. At mile 62.8 you will take a sharp turn off of Sakatah trail and begin your ride onto the best gravel of KKD GRAVEL. If you need something at this point, there is another Casey’s convenience store, but you will have to ride into Elysian and double back.

The next potential stop is around mile 92 in the city of Kilkenny. Here there are Toy Box Saloon and an Amoco Station. The Toy Box Saloon has pretzels, chips, coke, water etc. The Amoco Station is more of a garage, but should have soda, water, and candy bars. .

Your next potential stop is around mile 135. This stop is the Casey’s, Subway or Mackenthun’s grocery store in Lonsdale.

There are no more potential stops for this route. Well done in completing this Ultra!

While you likely know that the live music and food truck and majority of other riders will likely be gone when you pull in, there will be a select few cheering you on, and we’ll be sure to have food and drinks waiting for you, all of us eager to hear all about your ride.

Please note that the support vehicle that is available to riders in other routes is not necessarily available to you. This is an unsupported Ultra.

ULTRA CHECKPOINT: Upon reaching mile 135, your stop in Lonsdale, please text # (612) 636-4530 identifying who you are, and that you have made it to mile 135. This cell phone number is the same as the support #, and you should program it into your phone for checking in purposes, and in the event of an emergency.

START TIME FOR ULTRA IS 6:00AM.

    Enjoy your ride!

THE NUMBER 79

The route distances for this gravel event are based on the number 79, which is significant in the Duchenne community. 79 represents the 79 exons in the dystrophin gene. The dystrophin gene is the largest gene in the entire human body, which makes any treatments extremely difficult.

Every child with Duchenne has a mutation in the dystrophin gene.  There can be duplication of exons, deletion of exons or nonsense mutations where the gene just stops. We target 79 because the goal is that someday Duchenne patients can have a treatment that would help them produce full length dystrophin, the 79 exons that they need.

It is hard to believe how lucky most people are to be able to jump on their bikes and go for a ride, as just one exon missing of the many genes we have can result in such a terrible disease.

GRAVEL ROADS THAT EVERYONE KNOWS

KKD Gravel runs on the gravel roads that everyone grew up with.

KKD Gravel starts and finishes in Dakota County, traveling through Rice, Le Sueur, and Scott Counties, depending on your chosen distance.

The best way to describe the gravel roads that we ride for KKD Gravel, is to describe them as the familiar gravel roads that everyone knew growing up—relatively flat, uninterrupted skylines, corn and soy fields, spattering of cows, small townships here and there with their clusters of small surrounding homes, farmhouses, scents of manure and fertilizer, large irrigation systems, suburban outskirts, and various short sections of paved connecting thoroughfares.

KKD Gravel is not a gravel ride in the harrowing driftless region, nor one that takes place in a densely wooded logging area, and it doesn’t have too many b-roads or extra chunky sections. While those such rides are great, KKD Gravel is uniquely different in its familiarity. You’ll love it.
