ride rules

  • 1. KKD GRAVEL, the ride director, volunteers, sponsors, and all those involved in bringing this ride about are not responsible for your safety or your well-being.

    2. Each participant is considered to be on a private excursion and remains solely responsible for any accidents in which he or she may be involved. No responsibility can be accepted for participants becoming lost, stranded, injured, or worse.

    3. Participants must obey all laws: city, county, state, federal, etc. They must conduct themselves at all times in a dignified manner.

    4. You are on your own. Use your head. Watch for and yield to traffic; there will be no course marshals to hold up traffic.

  • 5. Participants will be responsible for downloading course maps, cue sheets, and/or GPX files prior to race day. These files will be riders’ means of navigation. There will be no course markings. Some street signs may be missing or illegible.

    6. Ultra riders must check-in at mile 135. Text number 612-636-4530 identifying your name and that you have made it to mile 135. No other routes require a check-in.

    7. The route should be followed at all times. Short cuts or alternate routes are frowned upon. The course may be altered in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseeable circumstance. Should this occur, participants will be sufficiently advised.

    8. If you exit the course for food, supplies, or any other reason, you should try and re-enter the course at the same spot you left. If you get lost, you should also try and backtrack to the point you left the course.

    9. Participants should not advance along the route by any means other than by bicycle or by foot or surfboard.

  • 10. Participants should start and complete the entire course on the same bicycle frame. All other components and equipment may be repaired or replaced during the event. If you have a secret bike hidden in a bush along the way, though, we’d probably look the other way.

    11. While operating their bicycle, participants must wear a securely fastened helmet that meets the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standard for bicycle helmets.

    12. All participants should have at least one clear front headlight and one red taillight for the duration of the event. More is better. All participants should have something reflective on their body, in case they are off the bike; e.g., vest, arm or leg bands, clothing. More is better.

    13. E-bikes, electric assist, and 100% human powered bikes are all allowed.

  • 17. KKD GRAVEL is a quasi self-supported bike ride. Participants should carry with them necessary food, water, equipment, and/or money for convenience stores. Caching supplies along the course is allowed, if you don’t think the racoons will get them.

    18. There is one support vehicle. This vehicle is primarily for The 17.9 Mile Stroll and Half 79er participants. To contact this support vehicle, call 612-636-4530. Support should only be called as a last option. You should expect that the support vehicle will not fix your bike, but rather will only bring you and your bike back to the Start/Finish line. Because there is only one support vehicle, you may end up waiting awhile.

    19. The support vehicle is available to participants of the 79 Mile Challenge, but only as a last resort option. Priority of requests for help will be given to the participants of the shorter routes.

    20. The support vehicle is not available to the Ultra participants.

    21. Typically personal outside support is not allowed during an event like this, where family or friends being present out on the course helping you with navigation or leaving drop bags would result in your disqualification. But we say ahh, whatever, you do you.

22 Shopping at convenience stores, visiting friendly farmers, and receiving help from fellow participants is allowed and encouraged.

    23. Drafting on another rider is allowed.

    24. Have a plan for whom to contact in an emergency or in case you cannot finish the ride and need to be picked up. The number for ride support is an option here. That number is 612-636-4530—program it into your phone.

  • 25. Participants may, in the case of an emergency, mechanical failure, or other problem, be assisted by motorized transport. By accepting motorized transport, you will NOT be disqualified from the ride.

    26. If a participant needs to withdraw from the ride, contact ride support and notify the event director at 612-636-4530. We check every rider off our list upon the rider finishing, and if withdrawal occurs without finishing, we want to make sure to notate that on our list of riders.

  • It is mandatory that you have fun. That you take a deep breathe and enjoy the country air. That you talk with another rider that you did not know prior to this event. And that you give someone a high five, preferably one of the Kasners.

  • 28. This event is a ride, and a race! Yes, BOTH can be done!!!

    29. KKD GRAVEL is meant to be ridden however you want. If you want to ride it casually, you are encouraged to do so and will find plenty of riders doing the same. If you want to race KKD GRAVEL, you are also encouraged to do so and again will find plenty of riders doing the same. For those who wish to race the event, we will have a Strava group timing component you will join prior to riding. That group can be found here. There will be KKD GRAVEL-etched stained glass medals for top and random finishers. See Pactimo Gravel Cup tab for further information on KKD Gravel’s involvement in the Pactimo Gravel Series.
